Low-cost, high-tech aircraft parts

Production costs can be very high for large, rotating aeroengine structures requiring stringent structural integrity. Delivery of a component targeted for future aircraft will prove the feasibility of a new manufacturing technology.

Manufacturing near-net-shape products significantly reduces processing time and production costs. When it comes to the large and complex components with stringent specifications required by the aerospace industry, this is no easy task.

EU-funded scientists are addressing the challenge, looking for a cost-effective way to produce conical and cylindrical components of approximately one metre in diameter. In particular, they are focusing on the rotating exhaust nozzle of the contra-rotating open rotor (CROR) engine concept with work on the project 'Rotating nozzle' (R-NOZZLE).

The CROR is among the many concepts being pursued by the EU to make air transport greener. Proof of the ability to deliver the rotating exhaust nozzle will be a milestone toward development of the CROR demonstrator. It will simultaneously open the door to production of large, rotating aeroengine components in a cost-effective way.

R-NOZZLE has progressed from the preliminary design phase to the critical design phase, and has nearly completed trials to assess manufacturing risk mitigation. By project-end, scientists expect to deliver all nozzle components required for the CROR.
