International peace through diplomacy

Expanding knowledge and achieving public awareness of interpersonal, intercultural and diplomatic perspectives is highlighted in social-cognitive and functional aspects of international negotiation.

Peace and negotiations are required in facing global challenges. A multidisciplinary approach involving the EU and the United States was developed in the PEACE NEGOTIATIONS project funded by the EU.

Through sustainable international alliances, preventative diplomacy and negotiations were explored. The project looked at complex real-world negotiation processes in conditions of uncertainty and ambiguity, and the ways in which highly trained diplomats operate. Attention was focused on the decision-making processes and investigations of experience-based processes rather than only on outcomes.

Interview results showed that people's personalities can influence political structures and actions. Integrating psychological and social processes into more comprehensive theories of international relations and strategic negotiating interaction is a means to contribute to and advance further work in this field.

A book has been published that applies the project's studies and research achievements. The work will be useful in international negotiations as a benchmark for conflict resolution.
