The October 1997 issue of "Euroabstracts" has been published by the European Commission''s INNOVATION programme. It provides information on recent scientific publications stemming from Community research activities.

Section I highlights a number of recent publications on innovation and research and development at global level. In addition to OECD reports on technology diffusion and technology trends, it spotlights reports on science policy in Japan and the USA. The EC Briefing looks at a number of recent publications relating to the EC''s technological and scientific policies. These include, research and regional development, the European Information Technology Observatory Yearbook, and a number of reports from the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies, part of the Joint Research Centre.

The in-depth feature in the latest issue covers the development of the Information Society. In particular, it is concerned with the establishment of an inclusive Information Society, avoiding the creation of a two-speed world and ensuring equitable access. Other publications featured in more detail address areas such as geographical information systems, oceanography and nuclear reactor safety. The "Webwatch" feature highlights the PROSOMA service, part of the ESPRIT programme, which is aimed at improving the industrial impact of the programme''s results.

Section II contains abstracts of some 60 publications, including full bibliographic details. The subjects covered include: chemistry; earth sciences; engineering and technology; energy production, conversion and conservation; life sciences; materials; mathematics, computers, telecommunications; nuclear science and engineering; and physics.
